About this app

Credit Karma (now part of Intuit) provides free credit scores, credit reports, and financial monitoring. The app gives you access to your TransUnion and Equifax scores, updated weekly, along with personalized recommendations for credit cards, loans, and savings accounts. Beyond credit scores, Credit Karma offers free tax filing, identity monitoring, savings accounts (via partner banks), and spending insights. The app's credit simulator lets you see how actions like paying down debt or opening new accounts might affect your score. Credit Karma makes money through personalized financial product recommendations, not by charging users. Your scores and reports are genuinely free with no hidden fees or trial periods.

Detailed Review

Credit Karma has become synonymous with free credit scores, and for good reason — it genuinely delivers comprehensive credit monitoring without charging a cent. Since being acquired by Intuit (TurboTax's parent company), the app has expanded into a broader financial health platform.

The core credit monitoring is excellent. Upon sign-up, you immediately see your TransUnion and Equifax credit scores, along with the key factors affecting each. Scores update weekly, and the app sends push notifications for significant changes. In our testing, score updates appeared every Monday morning consistently.

The credit reports are detailed and well-presented. Each account, inquiry, and public record is listed with clear explanations. The 'Dispute' button for incorrect items takes you directly to the bureau's dispute process — a genuinely helpful feature.

The credit simulator is the most educational feature. It lets you model scenarios: 'What happens if I pay off $5,000 in credit card debt?' or 'How would opening a new auto loan affect my score?' While the predictions aren't perfectly precise, they give directionally accurate guidance that helps users understand credit scoring.

Identity monitoring scans the dark web for your personal information and alerts you if your SSN, email, or phone number appears in data breaches. In our six-month testing period, it correctly flagged a breach involving one of our test email addresses.

The financial product recommendations are the trade-off. Credit Karma makes money by recommending credit cards, personal loans, and bank accounts — essentially targeted advertising based on your credit profile. The recommendations aren't bad (they show your approval odds), but it's important to understand the business model.

Free tax filing through Credit Karma Tax (now integrated with Intuit's systems) supports federal and state returns for most tax situations. For simple returns, it's a legitimate free alternative to TurboTax's paid tiers.

Our Verdict

Credit Karma is the best free credit monitoring tool available. Weekly score updates, credit reports, identity monitoring, and the credit simulator provide genuine value with zero cost. Just remember that the product recommendations are how they make money.
