Detailed Review
HERE WeGo comes from serious pedigree. HERE Technologies provides mapping data to BMW, Mercedes, Audi, Amazon, and numerous other enterprises. The consumer app brings this professional-grade mapping to everyone, for free, with no ads — a rarity in today's app landscape.
Offline maps are HERE WeGo's defining feature. You can download maps for entire countries — the US, France, Japan, wherever — and navigate with full turn-by-turn directions without any internet connection. Google Maps offers limited offline maps for selected areas, but HERE WeGo makes it effortless: tap 'Download' on a country and the entire map (roads, POIs, transit stops) is available offline.
This is transformative for international travelers. Land in a foreign country, put your phone in airplane mode to avoid roaming charges, and navigate completely offline. We tested this extensively in rural areas with no cell coverage and the routing worked perfectly, including voice guidance.
Driving navigation is solid if not spectacular. Turn-by-turn voice directions are clear, real-time traffic data (when online) reroutes around congestion, and speed limit warnings help avoid tickets. The routing algorithm is reliable — we never got led astray in testing. However, the interface lacks Google Maps' polish and the POI data is less comprehensive.
Public transit routing covers 1,900+ cities with departure times and route planning. The data quality varies — in major cities it's accurate, in smaller markets it's less reliable than dedicated transit apps like Transit or Citymapper.
Cycling navigation includes elevation profiles and bike-friendly route preferences, which is helpful for commuters and recreational riders. Walking navigation is straightforward with clear landmark-based directions.
The privacy angle deserves mention. HERE WeGo collects minimal data compared to Google Maps, which tracks your location history, search queries, and browsing patterns. For privacy-conscious users, this is a meaningful differentiator.
The downsides are mostly cosmetic and informational. The UI feels functional rather than beautiful. Business listings have fewer reviews and photos than Google Maps. And the app sometimes offers overly complex routes in areas where a simpler path exists.
For everyday local navigation, Google Maps or Waze remains more convenient. But for travel, rural navigation, and privacy-conscious users, HERE WeGo is the superior choice — and the price (free, forever) can't be beat.

Our Verdict
HERE WeGo is the best free offline navigation app available. For international travelers and anyone with unreliable cell coverage, the ability to download entire countries for offline use is unmatched. The enterprise-grade mapping data and zero-cost model make it an excellent Google Maps alternative.
